What defines a complete modern day Zimbabwean album? Subjectively speaking collaborations, visuals that are released simultaneously with the rest of the album, genre diversity, a relatable story/ major themes accompanying the project among other factors. With these suggestions in mind, Michael Magz’s Muna Jumbo, managed to incorporate these and is no doubt a good example of a complete album.
The album which comes after his departure from Samanyanga Sounds is a narration of Michael Magz’s music journey, ghetto story and aspirations told as if they have come to life already. Moreover, the album released at a time when the world celebrates love it also delves deep down into the matters of the heart with songs like Sorry ft Freeman, ChiHeavy, iyoyo ft Xiba and My Lover ft Samanthah .
Coming out of one of the best collaborative albums in recent memory, New Bhundu Boys, with Holy Ten the versatile artist Michael might have understood the impact of collaborations. This is evidenced with the album’s collaborations with Freeman on the track Sorry, Ndee wth Bagga, Iyoyo with Xiba, Gudhu plan with Killer T, My Lover with Samanthah and Weh yah deaf with Dhadza D. These collaborations make the album a mixed bag of sound with the ability capture a wide variety of listeners. Moreover, despite the artist being a renowned producer himself, he engaged quite a number of producers like Golden Fingers, Tadexx made it and Leekay.
Visuals have a way to strengthen the impact of art and Michael Magz was able to deliver his album with visuals for gudhu plan, chiheavy and his Intro track.
Speaking in terms of music, what can Michael Mags incapable of? That is the queston he leaves in the minds of music fans and critics like me. In the Muna Jumbo album he was able to incorporate multi-music genres from dancehall-Uhuh!!!, classic hip hop-I Told You, rhythm and blues- Chiheavy.
The album Muna Jumbo named after a street in Mufakose, where the artist comes from was much anticipated project after having a successful 2023 and leaving Samanyanga sounds. Released on the 18th of February 2024 just…. after the release of Holy Ten’s risky life 2 came out as a worthy competitor of his former pay master’s project
