Zim Captain Panashe Zuze & Kenya Captain Laban Kipsang

The Zimbabwe u20 rugby team, junior sables displayed a world class performance at the recently held Barthes Trophy in Nairobi Kenya to secure a back to back title win. Under the leadership of Shaun De Souza, the Jnr Sables program has flourished and walked into the Barthes Trophy tournament as the crowd favorites. The boys showed their dominance throughout the tournament securing a place in the final against hosting nation Kenya.

Kickstarting their title race the Jnr Sables took on Côte d’Ivoire and dominated to secure an emphatic 55-00 victory that advanced them to the semi-finals against Tunisia. As expected the boys continued their form and dominated Tunisia to get a decisive 66-00 victory, despite the ever changing Kenyan weather the boys were well prepared and conditioned. After Tunisia the Jnr Sables advanced to the final match of the tournament against the hosting nation Kenya. As expected, the Kenyans were a worthy opponent and gave a good challenge to the boys who quickly secured 21 points in the opening stages of the game. Kenya managed to score a try to bring the game to 21-7 just before half time. The second half of the game came as a nightmare with Zimbabwean flanker getting an unnecessary red card for a dangerous tackle that left many fans wondering if the match officials were biased. Despite the red card and constant bashing by the Simba’s, the Jnr Sables maintained composure and scored another try in the final 10 mins of the games to bring the score-line to 28-7. As the game ended the Jnr Sables, were victorious once again to become ‘back to back’ Barthes Trophy holders.

It is safe to say the future of Zimbabwean rugby is in safe hands with this group of boys.
