Trevor Dongo’s latest addition to his already decorated music catalogue does not only justify why it’s impossible to have a conversation about Zimbabwean RnB/Soul/Afro Pop music but also why he is considered by many as the King of the genre. The twelve project titled Seasons which was released on the 18th of May 2024 cleverly brings out the infinite power of music as an art form with the title symbolically complimenting the contents of the project. The project which shares love stories describes different phases of love which are birth (spring), growth (summer), autumn (decline) and death (winter) of love.
Birth(spring)
Varipo, the first track of the album is a song that celebrates a relationship that has stood the test of time because of its strong foundation and continues to stand firm. The album also touches the celebration of love with the tracks Get ready (featuring Shinsoman and King Shady) and Wedding song featuring Libizo which address love ceremonies. Get ready fits perfectly for Marooro ceremonies as it comes in the for a proposal for marriage while wedding song describes what the title says.
Growth(Summer)
Moreover, the project moves into a growth phase with the track distance which features Shannon. Distance is a dialogue between a man and woman celebrating the miracle of their growing love for each other despite the distance between them. This idea is carried into the track Hatizvitye which has Trevor talking of not fearing for his love despite the people interfering with the desire to see it fail. Sex is considered to be a very crucial aspect in the growth of marriage and in the track Usavi Trevor Dongo with the help of Exq uses metaphors to address this issue and its importance. Ginger remix (featuring Ishan, Tamy Moyo, Nyasha David and Lawd Jae) is a second version of the ginger which has Trevor Dongo and Ishan only. The track is an expression of love love and falls perfectly in the growth phase as compliments are said to be essential for love to keep growing.
Decline (Autumn)
The album also touches the aspect of decline with the track hurting which features Young Gemeni. The track is a dialogue between lovers whose relationship has turned sour despite showing potential at first. Zuva rawandisiya digs deeper into the decline phase with the artist expressing regret for a relationship that could not work out but has has an element of hope as Trevor expresses his desire to makes things right if given another chance.
Death(Winter)
The track Chiyenda which feature Yoz is a track that addresses a failed relationship and the desire to let go because of the pain of unrequited love. This is also addressed in the track Tisamanikidze which features Freeman which encourages separation if the relationship fails to work out. Takambozviedza also speaks of this issue with artist refusing to give his heart away again after being hurt in a previous relationship.
