Zimbabwe ‘Sables’ win the Rugby Africa Men’s Cup 2024

The Sables displayed a cohesive and world class performance to win the Rugby Africa Men’s Cup in the Ugandan capital Kampala.

The Sables last won the Rugby Africa Men’s Cup in 2012, and came in the tournament as underdogs. However they rose to the occasion and secured their first win of the tournament after defeating hosting nation Uganda 22 – 20. Next up was Namibia which is considered to be only second to the Sprinboks in Africa, the Sables made light work of them securing a 32 – 10 winning scoreboard. The win against Namibia put the Sables into the final against Algeria.

Algeria had reached their first final after the impressive wins over Ivory Coast and Kenya, the Sables were chasing a second title having last won 12 years ago in 2012. Sables Trevor Gurwe set them up with 2 first half tries but tries from replacement front-row Liam Larkan and openside flank Godfrey Muzanargo in the second half sealed the win for Zimbabwe.

‘This is a dream come true for every player and staff member. We dedicate this victory to the millions of Zimbabweans who have supported us throughout our journey’ remarked the Sables captain Hilton Mudariki. This victory sees Zimbabwe jump to 28th in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings, our highest ranking since November 2015.

The current success in Zimbabwean Rugby is a sight for sore eyes, offering more support as a country will lead to more successes. Congratulations Sables!
